It’s a common situation. You’re sitting with a friend and a gorgeous woman walks past the both of you. Your friend leans in to you and says, “You think those are real?” You respond, “Totally implants. Those can’t possibly be her real ears.” Luckily, otoplasty (better known as cosmetic ear surgery) does not help you hear any better, so the gorgeous woman doesn’t overhear your conversation.

What is it?
Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that aims to reduce the size of large, floppy ears. While there are many different scenarios and procedures within the field of otolaryngology (an English word so suspiciously long, one might suspect it’s somehow German), the most common is referred to as “pinning back the ears”, which helps to correct ears that protrude too far from the head (2 cm from the back of the head, to be exact, though I’m not sure what ear impresario decided that).

The surgery lasts somewhere around two hours and consists of a small incision being made behind the ear, in the crease where the ear and head meet. From there, the surgeon can remove skin and cartilage or possibly even reshape or trim the cartilage. Lastly, your newly sculpted cartilage will be secured by permanent stitches. The recovery period is generally quick (at least quicker than most plastic surgery procedures) and will probably require wearing soft dressings over the ears or possibly even a headband (maybe consider going on tour with Willie Nelson for the entirety of your headband/recovery time).

Besides pinning back the ears, otoplasty can cover mostly all of your cosmetic ear needs. Ear deformities can be corrected, such as “lop-ear deformity”, which occurs when the raised cartilage, which shapes the upper portion of the ear, does not form completely. Torn earlobes can also be corrected, and if you’re missing an ear (perhaps Mike Tyson bit one of them off) you can opt for a brand new artificial ear, primarily constructed out of rib cartilage, soft tissue, and maybe a biomedical implant.

Who needs it?
Ear deformities completely justify otoplasty, first and foremost. It’s less easy to justify surgery that generally ranges between $2,000 and $5,000, because you think your ears stick out too far from your head. But if you’re willing to pay, and there are always people willing to pay, then shoot for some otoplasty if you feel it will raise your self-esteem. In all honesty though, after perusing through many different “before and after” pictures, I sometimes had trouble identifying which was the “before” and which was the “after”.

That being said, otoplasty is considered to be one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures among men, probably due to the higher visibility of the ears on account of shorter hair (excluding Fabio of course, who isn’t so much of a man as he is a stallion). However, otoplasty will benefit children, as young as four or five, more than anyone. It makes sense, considering that the only time you will probably ever be harassed for having “retarded” ears is during adolescence.

Benefits
One of the biggest benefits of cosmetic ear surgery is that it has one of the lowest risk rates among plastic surgery. On top of that, otoplasty can correct a wide range of ear deformities, such as large ears, small ears, protruding ears, cupped ears, cauliflower ears, and folded ears. But of course, the most evident benefit is psychological (this is cosmetic surgery, folks), which means you feel less likely to be a target, naturally raising self-confidence by eliminating bullies.

Risks
Though otoplasty is considered low-risk, complications can possibly occur, such as infection, overcorrection, and, in extremely rare cases, altered hearing. In addition to that, common side effects from the procedure are postoperative pain, itching, and occasional numbness, though all of these can be easily treated with medication.

The bottom line
Due to its low risk nature, otoplasty is can be a quick fix for deformed ears, whether naturally deformed or deformed from an accident. However, it’s a lot of money for a problem that, in terms of adults, seems rather trivial, especially if your ears are only slightly larger than normal. The procedure appears to be more appropriate for children… but let’s face it, children getting plastic surgery seems a little dubious as well. And plus, look what great things big-eared people have done with their lives: Martin Lawrence had his own sitcom and was nominated for an MTV movie award for his portrayal of “Big Momma” in the unforgettable Big Momma’s House; Prince Charles is a freaking prince; Will Smith, who is technically a prince as well, wrote and performed “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It”, which is considered by some (me) to be the national anthem; and come on, let’s not forget our president, Barack Obama, letting big-eared kids all around the country know that someday they can be president too.

From A Cup To C Cup

Breast implants simply do not appear in cup sizes. Unfortunately you cannot meet investing in a breast augmentation surgeon and ask them for C cup breast implants. Once you recognize a bit on what goes into breast enlargement, however, you plans to know how to ask for what you would like from your doctor. Breast implants come in various sizes defined by the amount of saline or silicone volume within the implant. For example, smaller breast implants come in sizes such as 200cc, 250cc and so on. The largest implants come in sizes like 1200cc, 1600cc, and 2000cc. The most common breast implant
size is around 350cc.

Each plastic surgeon is different and will discuss the breast size topic with you differently. In short, doctors will talk about it this way: 1) Some will talk about bra cup size with you, but they will be sure to talk about it in general ways. 2) Other doctors will only talk about breast implant sizes. 3) Still others will keep the topic so general that they will prefer to use terms like “Big, Bigger, or Biggest”. Why are there so many ways to approach the subject of cup size? The first issue has to do with the variety of ways in which bra manufacturers define cup size in their bras.

You have probably already noticed that a bra from one manufacturer fits you as a B cup, while a bra from another company may fit you as an A cup. Savvy to this problem, doctors recognize they cannot possibly fit you to each of these manufacturers. Another issue has to do with communication between the patient and the doctor. One patient’s mental vision of a C cup may be very different from that of another.

Using before and after photos of other women is a bit helpful but fraught with problems as well. These pictures are not only two-dimensional, they are of breast implants placed on another woman’s body. As each woman’s body is unique, how can a surgeon use a two-dimensional photo to make a determination of breast implant size? From A Cup To C Cup

Many surgeon’s understand, however, that cup size is really the only language we have for breast sizes. To discuss the matter at all, it is very difficult not to use terms like D cup and DD cup in a discussion. The single best way today to talk about breast size is with the use of breast implant sizers. Modern sizing systems are designed so that you can try on various breast implant sizes to get an idea of how large your breasts will be given different implant sizes.

By wearing various breast implant sizes over a period of a few days or weeks, you can begin to feel the difference as to what breast size is right for you. Breast implant sizing systems usually come with sports bras that have no cup size. The reasons for this are all the same as noted above. The critical value to these systems, however, is that you can wear your favorite breast size to your consultation and show the doctor what kind of breast size you want.

The clear advantage to this method is that you can show the doctor what you want in three-dimensions and on your own body. That is a far cry better than talking in general terms or using pictures of other women. Start taking actions and work towards your dream figure!

Breast augmentation has been popular with women for decades. Many people may assume this operation is reserved for the younger crowd, but that would be an incorrect assumption. For one thing, just because a woman is getting older, it doesn’t mean that she doesn’t care about her appearance. The term “sexy senior citizen” can be true. Retirement communities are hopping with dating and romance for those who aren’t still married. For married couples, nothing keeps the fire alive like a woman feeling good about her body. The men are pretty happy to see perky breasts on their wives and girlfriends, too. Many of these grannies are not only going for new bustlines but repairing the old ones that they implanted years ago. Here are some things to think about:

- Popular operation since the 1960′s: Women throughout time have tried various methods to obtain a fuller bosom. From stuffing Kleenex and socks into ones bra, wearing falsies or push up bras, or injecting various solutions such as silicone, peanut oil or wax, curves have been desired. Breast implants filled with silicone or saline showed up in the sixties and have since become commonplace.

- Grannies replacing their sets of implants: Some recommendations from various medical practitioners are for implants to be replaced every couple of decades. If Grandma received hers years ago, there’s a good chance she’ll get new ones instead of having the old pair removed. Women in their seventies are replacing their silicone implants and sometimes with a larger size. Go granny go.

- Today’s seniors are different: The older crowd of today is the same rebellious crowd that initiated “free love” and “make love not war” back in the 1960′s. This crowd is not a repressed or passive group. These retirement-aged individuals aren’t going to take looking haggard and worn out lying down. These people still fight for causes and want to be taken seriously. Feeling good about one’s appearance with breast augmentation is another way to stay in the mainstream of society.

- Younger bodies than yesteryear’s grandmas: Due to increased knowledge about nutrition, exercise, relaxation and access to health care, the oldsters of today are looking younger all the time. With proper exercise and diet, there’s no reason for a person to wither away into a flabby, saggy has-been. By following a healthy template of lean proteins, fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and lots of water, a body will stay slender. Working out at the gym or practicing yoga can keep a person flexible and firm. Breasts can be filled out with implants to complete the youthful look.

- Sex still a probability: Younger individuals might think the older ones couldn’t possibly still be interested in sex. This assumption would be incorrect. If a person uses it, they won’t lose it. Having cleavage one can be proud of in one’s golden years can be beneficial in the bedroom.

Breast augmentation can provide fullness to the bosom of women in all age groups. Just because a woman has received her A A R P card doesn’t mean she can’t still have alluring breasts.

Having smooth, perfect skin is the ultimate goal for many people, but few actually do. Whether you have sun damage, clogged pores, or are clearly just aging, your face might be dotted with imperfections. However, there are plenty of facial skin care remedies, no matter your ailment.

Many women show signs of aging, even when they are still quite young. Common issues are wrinkles, sagging skin, and liver spots, to name a few. These typically only get worse as you get older if you let nature take its course, but there are plenty of fixes for these ailments.

Wrinkle cream is popular to decrease the appearance of fine lines. If this treatment does not work for you, or you prefer more dramatic results, botox or collagen injections might be the way to go. They will literally not allow your face to wrinkle, which eliminates the need to worry about fine lines.

Acne is mainly an issue for younger people, though you can still have some as you age. If topical ointments you can buy over the counter do not work for you, visit a dermatologist for prescription treatments like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.

Some people still do not respond to this type of facial skin care, so they have to take oral retinoid, and perhaps later have a chemical peel to remove blackheads.

If you think you have acne in your thirties, you might actually have rosacea, which causes your face to constantly be red and filled with pimples. It is often caused by the sun or a bacterial infection. It can be treated with antibiotics and a topical ointment, or photodynamic therapy in extreme cases to reduce redness.

You might try to cover undereye circles with makeup, but eliminating them altogether is advised. You can apply creams that contain chamomile and vitamin E. Surgical remedies include chemical peels and collagen injection to get rid of undereye circles, which are exacerbated by lack of sleep, sun damage, and any conditions like allergies that affect the eyes.

If you have one or more warts on your face, you are likely eager to get rid of them. You can risk removing them at home using odd suggestions like duct tape, banana peels, or just cutting them off.

However, such procedures are usually dangerous, and you are better off buying a kit that allows you to freeze the wart, or even visiting a dermatologist to burn it off with a laser.

Most of these conditions can be prevented through proper facial skin care. However, knowing more about your issue can lead to knowledge of available treatment. You can then decide whether to treat it on your own or get professional assistance.

If you are considering cosmetic surgery, it is no surprise that a great plastic surgeon is your best bet for the results you want. An inexperienced physician can cause you to have to get a revision operation after a negative experience. Before you choose a doctor for your procedure, take some steps to ensure that you are getting the best one possible.

One of the first things to do is find a doctor that comes with plenty of recommendations from family and friends. Ask around, as you may be surprised who has experience with cosmetic surgery, or at least knows someone who does. This can supply you with a short list of doctors that are known for being good at what they do. You may even get a few opinions on who you should avoid, which is also helpful.

Once you have a list of surgeons, it is time to start calling each one to find out if they provide the services you seek. If they do indeed perform the surgery you need, find out if they offer a free initial consultation.

This type of meeting can help acquaint you with each plastic surgeon. You should feel comfortable asking questions about the procedure you are interested in, and should feel satisfied with their answers. If you do not feel comfortable with the plastic surgeon you are meeting with, it is not advisable to commit to a procedure with them.

At each consultation, ask questions about not only the surgery, but also the doctor. Find out their educational background, as well as their experience. Many surgeons also list this information on their website, which you can access before you even meet.

This may ensure that you only meet with doctors who have years of performing surgeries under their belt, allowing you to be confident in their skills. You can then clear up any confusion you have regarding their background when you meet with them.

At the end of your research, you should be able to find a plastic surgeon you like. You should not only feel comfortable in their office, asking them questions about themselves and the procedure, but you should also feel confident that they know what they’re doing.

Additionally, the physician you choose should be one that comes highly recommended by friends and family members, as you should be able to trust their opinion since they all likely have your best interest at heart.

Breast reduction surgeries can reduce a slew of problems. But there are some risks women should be aware of. Here are some things to think about.

Breast reduction surgery is also called by its more formal name of reduction mammaplasty. Women who choose to have this type of operation are usually quite relieved and happy with the results. Extremely large breasts can be cumbersome, painful and the subject of ridicule and embarrassment. After achieving a more proportionate shape, post-op patients often feel a great sense of freedom. There are risks, however, that females who are considering this type of operation should be aware of. Here are some things to think about:

- Cumbersome: Excessively large bosoms make buying clothes a difficult process. It’s hard to achieve a proper fit when one’s chest is out of proportion. Participating in certain sports, especially those that entail running and jumping, can be out of the question. The pain experienced by toting this extra poundage cannot even be alleviated with a sturdy sports bra.

- Painful: Huge breasts rub against the skin on the midsection below them as well as against the lower portion of a bra. This can cause skin irritation and rashes which can be very uncomfortable. Bra straps often dig into the shoulders’ flesh due to the weight of the bosoms. Posture problems, shoulder and neck aches, and backaches may occur, as well.

- Embarrassment: Many females develop these immense chests at young ages such as twelve years old. They may still be children, but they are often already the subject of men gawking, ogling, staring and making cat calls. This can be highly embarrassing for these pre-teens and something that they will likely experience into adulthood.

A reduction mammaplasty is a surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon in a hospital or clinical setting. The operation takes two or three hours and is performed under general anesthesia. An overnight stay is usually required before a patient is ready to be released. There will be pain and swelling initially which will recede over time. Pain medication is given at first in order to make the patient more comfortable. During surgery, the nipple and areola will be removed and reattached after a portion of the breast skin and tissue is removed. Liposuction may be done to remove excess fatty deposits. There will be scarring but it will fade over time.

Some risks that patients should be aware of before the procedure include:

- Unexpected scarring: No one knows ahead of time exactly how the scars will look. Some individuals’ scars end up fairly light and barely noticeable while others have much more pronounced results.

- Infection: All surgical procedures carry some risk of infection. This is usually easily controlled with antibiotics.

- Breastfeeding may be impossible: A woman who is planning to have future children should realize that her ability to breastfeed may be limited or nonexistent.

- Loss of sensitivity: Nipple sensitivity may be lessened after the procedure.

Breast reduction surgery can lighten a woman’s load both physically and emotionally. It can be a great change in her life but she needs to be aware of the risks of complications before going under the scalpel.

If you’ve been considering breast augmentation but still have some doubts, there will be some questions you want to address to a qualified and board-certified plastic surgeon before committing to the procedure. Here are some important questions you will want to ask during your consultations with potential surgeons to help you decide if breast implants are right for you.

How often do patients return for revision surgery?

Unhappy customers make it known, especially if it is as something as important as a cosmetic surgery procedure. If the surgeon dodges the question or answers evasively, there may be something wrong; however, if he is candid and can provide a sufficient answer, you should feel more at ease. Every surgeon, no matter how skilled, will have some degree of unsatisfied customers, which is normal.

Ask also about examples of revision cases. What is the result of a misunderstanding between the surgeon and patient? Was it due to uncontrollable circumstances? Was it merely high expectations on the patient’s part? There are many different reasons why a patient might have to return for a revision, some of which have nothing to do with the surgeon’s skills.

What is the recovery like?

Most women already have their new underwear and outfits picked out months, or even years before they are ready to undergo this procedure; however, you’ll also have to survive the recovery period. While some may want you to believe it’s pain-free and easy, the truth is that it varies greatly by individual.

Some women will heal remarkably quickly and feel little to no discomfort, but most will find it to be somewhat painful, and in rare cases, practically unbearable. You will also have to take time off of work, and probably won’t exactly feel like showing off your new body until after the initial bruising and swelling has subsided.

What are the potential risks?

All surgeries carry certain complications and risks. This range from mild to prolonged swelling and bruising, to severe such as capsular contracture, breast implant leaks, and excessive bleeding. Most risks occur shortly after surgery, but breast implants do have certain long term risks that can develop over time. Be sure to discuss these thoroughly with your surgeon.

Will breast implants feel and look natural?

Breast augmentation results can vary greatly by individual aesthetic taste, breast implant type, and surgeon skill. Discuss with your surgeon the pros and cons of both silicone implants and saline, to help you make the best choice.

How large you choose to go will also affect the overall natural look and tactile appeal of your breasts. Your surgeon can make certain recommendations, but ultimately, you’ll have to decide what will feel and look the best for you.

Is breast augmentation worth the investment?

This is one question your surgeon probably can’t answer for you. Ask yourself if you think the money, time, risks, and results will be worth the effort. Are you getting breast implants to improve your self esteem or are you getting them for someone else? You need to make the decision that will make you the most content and comfortable.

Plastic surgery is becoming more and more popular amongst your normal every day women. Financing options and good credit make it more affordable and easier to have; while celebrity adoration makes it less taboo. For many women, striving to reach their idea of the perfect body – exercise and dieting simply doesn’t cut it. Young and old, fat and thin – tens of thousands of women are going under the knife for liposculpting procedures every day.

To be very clear, I have taken up no qualms with cosmetic surgery. I am realistic and know that for many women, looking good on the outside helps them to feel even better on the inside. With that said, if you are considering lipo in hopes of getting an hourglass figure there are a few things you should know.

Liposuction, as a procedure sucks the layers of fat from areas of your body – more specifically your abdomen and waist. Some women get lipo to simply have a flatter stomach. Others get liposuction to reshape their bodies. Surprisingly enough, the question of whether or not lipo will lead to an hourglass figure is largely dependent on your body and bone structure – not the technique or skill set of your cosmetic surgeon.

Just as a quick reminder, the hourglass body type is defined by having proportionate bust and hip measurements along with a waistline that is ten to twelve inches smaller. For example, 36-24-36 is considered hourglass measurements. Our waist size is determined by the underlying width and structure of the rib cage. A surgeon would also need to consider the distance between the bottom of your rib cage and the top of your pelvic bone.

If the structure of your rib cage is naturally wide, then there may be very little that can be done to reshape you. In other words, you have to determine what it is that stops you from being an hourglass naturally. If layers of fat on your waist, sides and flanks hide your waist – then that is relatively easy to remedy with liposuction. If your rib cage is wide and the amount of fat is minimal, the procedure will not yield the results you desire.

There are other options which are far more drastic, like removing a rib. Ultimately the best way to determine the most ideal solution for you is to meet with an experienced cosmetic/plastic surgeon. Many do reduced (or free) consultations – so it doesn’t hurt to try.

Some people close to you may admonish and chastise you for even considering elective surgery for such a “superficial” reason – don’t feel bad about your decision to research the possibilities. It is your body, your life and you deserve to live it the way you see fit.

Searching for a plastic surgeon is never easy. This field has highly targeted advertising, and all surgeons sound great from their ads and websites. You have to learn how to look beyond the advertising to see what the doctor is really all about.

Look at Specialty

One of the first areas you need to check out is the doctor’s specialty. While most surgeons can perform a variety of procedures, most will also have some area of specialty, such as breast improvement or facial reconstruction. If possible, choose a doctor who specializes in the area you wish to have treated, rather than someone who practices general cosmetic surgery.

Medical Training

In order to be a plastic surgeon, a doctor has to attend medical school and then receive further training in cosmetic surgery. That said, you may want to look into the actual schools and degrees the doctor has. This will tell you a little about that doctor’s level of expertise. Similarly, find out if the doctor has board certification. Lack of board certification does not necessarily mean the doctor isn’t a good one, but board certification does show that the doctor has attained a level of education and training. If a doctor claims board certification, you can visit that board’s website to verify the status.

Facilities

The facilities the plastic surgeon offers are also important, especially if procedures are performed in an on-site surgery center rather than at the hospital. Ask if you can tour the facilities to see them for yourself. You want them to look clean, modern, and inviting. Do not be swayed by fancy waiting rooms and consultation offices. Ask to see the actual area where procedures occur.

Hospital Privileges

Having cosmetic surgery performed outside of the hospital is very common and not altogether bad, but you do want to find a plastic surgeon who has hospital permissions. This ensures that you can get the care you need should something go wrong with your procedure. Hospital permission is not difficult for a doctor to get, and the fact that he took the time to get it shows that he cares about patient safety. This is the sign of a good doctor.

Personality and Professionalism

If everything else checks out, schedule a consultation with the doctor. You will want the opportunity to talk face to face and get a feel for the doctor’s professionalism and personality. Explain your goals and desires for surgery, and see what kind of plan he comes up with to help you meet those goals. You will get an excellent understanding of the doctor’s personality and plan for your procedure at the consultation. Treat it like an interview, and use it in making your final decision.

Remember, a plastic surgeon offers you the chance to embrace a new appearance, and you want to make sure he will give you the look you are dreaming of. By taking the time to carefully research the doctor and find the right one, you are putting yourself in a better position to fully enjoy the outcome of your surgery.

In keeping with my recent articles on anti-aging and skin care basics, I realized it was also important to talk about which vitamins, minerals and nutrients you can take for great skin. What’s really terrific is when your skin is healthy, it’s likely that the rest of you will be, too. In Part 1 of this article, I’ll talk about which vitamins will make you look and feel great. In Part 2, I’ll talk about which nutrients you can apply topically for beautiful, glowing skin.

Keep in mind that many of these nutrients are available in the foods you eat, particularly if you eat a balanced diet of colorful foods such as green leafy vegetables, fruits in season, whole grains, lean meats and fish.

You’ll notice that many of the vitamins and minerals I list aid your skin and body because they’re potent antioxidants – chemicals that fight the tendency for oxygen-containing free radicals to harm our cells and DNA.

Vitamin C is one of the most common supplements we take, for good reason. We even use its antioxidant properties in the kitchen. Want to keep a cut apple from turning brown in the air? Coat it with a little vitamin C-rich citrus juice. This same action also keeps your cells and DNA from breaking down when exposed to free-radical forming agents such as cigarette smoke and sunlight. Take up to 1,000 mg per day as a supplement, or add more citrus and green vegetables to your diet to make sure you’re getting the maximum benefit from vitamin C.

Vitamin E is another potent antioxidant that works at combating free radicals in your skin and throughout your body. While it’s safe to take in doses of up to 400 IU per day, usually the amount of vitamin E in your multivitamin will be adequate.

Folic acid is beneficial in supporting cell division and DNA production, both of which can protect your skin cells. Making sure you take at least 400 micrograms per day can help prevent skin diseases, certain forms of cancer and anemia.

Carotenoids including beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein all function as antioxidants. Find these colorful nutrients in supplement form or just add extra red, yellow and orange foods to your diet to tap into their damage-fighting mojo. Beta carotene is a precursor of vitamin A, another vitamin antioxidant which has been shown to fight the signs of aging, especially when vitamin A is applied topically in the form of Retin-A. (More on that in Part 2 of this article.)

Selenium, zinc and copper are all important to your skin’s health for different reasons. Selenium is a potent antioxidant, zinc controls oil production and, along with copper, is important in the formation of skin-supporting elastin. Each of these minerals will usually show up in adequate supplies in a diet rich in nuts, meat and grains, and in your multivitamin, so don’t worry about taking extra supplements.

Fish oil is a supplement you may already be taking for its ability to protect your heart and nervous system. The good news is that according to a scientific study published in 2005, one of its Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA, also fights sun damage and reduces wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid, the same compound that’s found in our skin and in the cosmetic fillers Restylane® and Juvederm®, is available to take in supplement form. Taken orally, its water-binding nature can fill out skin for a more beautiful appearance.

So that’s the “inside” story. Next time, Part 2 of this article will show how you can feed your skin from the outside!
